Prunus serotina, a fruit species better known as wild cherry, grows on prunus avium trees. In the sphere of alternative medicine, wild cherry is known for its medicinal qualities. Wild cherry may prove beneficial in the treatment of some ailments and medical conditions.

The laboratory research included human cells, but not human participants.

Wild cherry may improve heart health, according to a study published in the June 2009 edition of the "Latin American Journal of Chemistry." Researchers found that wild cherry extract contains secondary metabolites that promote vascular relaxation. The research team concluded that the leaves of the wild cherry plant may be effective in treating hypertension.

Wild cherry bark is often used to treat chest congestion. The bark helps loosen mucus by helping your respiratory tissues relax.
