palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl)

back to ingredient overview

A signal peptide and fragment of procollagen type 1, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (previously referred to as palmitoyl pentapeptide-3) is sold commercially as Matrixyl. Palmitic acid is added to the peptide chain to improve penetration. Hailed as a very promising cosmeceutical ingredient during the 20th World Congress of Dermatology in Paris, 2002, research showed palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 produced substantial improvements in wrinkle appearance more quickly than retinol and without the negative effects such as irritation and dryness.

It has been proven to stimulate collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis and improve photoaged skin. Clinical studies showed positive changes in elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid concentrations, resulting in a decrease in depth, volume and length of wrinkles.
