Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid used in skin care products to adjust the acidity or to promote skin peeling and re-growth in the case of anti-aging products. Citric acid is naturally found in citric fruits and juices, providing the characteristic acidic taste.
Citric acid is rich in vitamin C which is considered to be a very powerful antioxidant that not only stimulates collagen production but contains the skin damaging activities of free radicals. Consequently, citric acid can actually improve the health of skin cells which in turn promotes healing and the ability of the skin to protect itself against a variety of harmful environmental factors. Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits are the most common source of citric acid.
Citric acid also can effectively treat pigment and/or age spots. It is also used for its astringent and skin lightening properties.
