Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids that are a major structural component of the skin's outer layer and are necessary for the skin's water retention capacity. Ceramides also contribute to the renewal of keratinocytes (epidermis cells), which decrease as the skin ages, resulting in dry skin. Ceramide 2 is an essential skin molecule that captures and binds water which is required by the epidermis in order to remain supple, smooth and hydrated.
