african pepper (afromomum melegueta)

back to ingredient overview

Aframomum melegueta, also known as “grains of paradise”, “melegueta pepper”, “Guinea grains”, “Guinea pepper” and “alligator pepper” is a species of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) native to the west coast of Africa. Aframomum melegueta has been noted as a means to treat and prevent the inflammatory response. Aframomum contains one or more phytochemicals that can be used against P. acnes to reduce the growth of the bacterium on the skin. It also contains compounds called gingerols, which are chemically similar to other anti-inflammatory compounds.

The extract from this plant also has the ability to diminish swelling and pain and to improve the renewal of skin, making it a suitable natural ingredient in skin-care products.
